Because the 462 has country caps, an English requirement and — for some passports — education and government-support requirements, applicants trip up more often than on the 417. An agent helps you assemble the right supporting documents and, where a ballot or cap applies, understand the timing.

Work and Holiday 462 — frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the 462 and the 417?+
Both are 12-month Working Holiday visas, but the 462 (Work and Holiday) covers a different set of countries — including the USA, China and India — and adds a functional English requirement, annual caps and, for some countries, an education and government-support requirement. The 417 has no English requirement and no cap.
What are the English requirements for the 462 visa?+
You generally need functional English — for example IELTS 4.5 overall, or an equivalent test — unless you are exempt. Some passports also require you to have completed a minimum level of tertiary study.
How do I extend my 462 to a second or third year?+
A second year requires 88 days of specified regional work during your first year. A third year requires 179 days of specified work during your second year. The Department sets which types of work and which regions qualify.
Is there a cap or ballot on the 462 visa?+
Yes. The 462 has annual limits for each participating country, and for some high-demand countries (such as China, India and Vietnam) places are allocated through a ballot. This is a key difference from the uncapped 417.
Can I do any job on a 462 visa?+
You can work full-time to support your travels, with the same general limit on time with a single employer as the 417. The visa is intended as a holiday first, with incidental work.
