Working Holiday 417 — frequently asked questions

What is the age limit for the 417 visa?+

The standard age limit is 18–30 (inclusive) at the time you apply. For several countries — including the UK, Canada, France, Ireland, Italy and Denmark — the limit is raised to 35. Check the current list for your passport before applying.

How do I get a second-year 417 visa?+

You must complete 88 days (about 3 months) of specified work — such as regional farm work, construction or bushfire recovery — in a designated regional area during your first Working Holiday year. A third year requires a further 88 days of specified work during your second year.

What is the difference between the 417 and 462 visa?+

They are very similar Working Holiday visas but cover different countries. The 417 covers mostly European and East Asian passports with no annual cap and no English requirement. The 462 (Work and Holiday) covers a different set of countries — including the USA, China and India — and adds caps, an English requirement and, for some, an education requirement.

Can I work full-time on a Working Holiday visa?+

Yes, you can work full-time to fund your travels. Historically there was a 6-month limit with any one employer, though this has been relaxed at times — check the current rule before you start a long-term job.

Can I study on a 417 visa?+

Yes. You can study for up to 4 months (17 weeks) while on a Working Holiday visa.
