United KingdomAsked by Chidinma Ugwu10 July 2026If you are applying for a UK visa for longer than 6 months and you have been living in a country where tuberculosis (TB) is common, you must get a TB test as part of your Student visa application.
Countries currently requiring a TB test for UK visas (6 months+) include:
Most of Africa, most of Asia (including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, China, Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Myanmar), most of Latin America (including Brazil, Colombia, Peru), and parts of Eastern Europe.
Countries NOT requiring a TB test (generally low-incidence):
Most of Western Europe, USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea.
The UKVI publishes the full current list at gov.uk — always check before applying as the list can change.
The test process:
1. Find a UKVI-approved clinic in your country (the list is on the UKVI website)
2. Attend in person — bring passport
3. Get a chest X-ray
4. If clear: Receive a TB test certificate within a few days. This is valid for 6 months.
5. Include the certificate with your visa application
Cost: Approximately USD 40–100 depending on your country and clinic.
If TB is detected: You will be referred for treatment before being cleared. Having had TB in the past does not automatically disqualify you — UKVI assesses based on current health.
Do not use an unapproved clinic: Results from non-approved clinics will not be accepted and your visa will be refused.
