United KingdomAsked by Siddharth Joshi10 July 2026A UK Student visa refusal is stressful, but you have options. Here is what to do:
Immediate steps:
- Read the refusal letter very carefully — it must state the reasons for refusal
- Note any deadlines mentioned (for administrative review or appeal)
Your options depend on the refusal reason:
1. Administrative Review:
If you believe UKVI made a factual error in processing your application (e.g., miscalculated your finances, misread a document), you can request an Administrative Review within 14 days (from within the UK) or 28 days (from outside the UK).
- Fee: £80
- UKVI reviews the caseworker's decision — this is not an independent appeal
2. Reapply:
If the refusal was due to missing documents, insufficient funds, or unclear information — gather stronger evidence and reapply. There is no cooling-off period.
3. Appeal to the First-tier Tribunal (Immigration and Asylum Chamber):
Right of appeal is limited. Most student visa refusals on grounds of credibility or financial evidence do not carry appeal rights. Check your refusal letter — it will state whether you have appeal rights.
4. Judicial Review:
If you have exhausted administrative options and believe UKVI acted unlawfully, you can apply for judicial review in the High Court. This is expensive and slow.
Most common refusal reasons and fixes:
- Financial evidence issues: Use a OISC-registered immigration adviser to ensure you present finances correctly
- Genuine Student doubts: Strengthen your personal statement, explain your career plan better
- English language: Resit IELTS if your score is borderline
- ATAS not obtained: Get ATAS clearance before reapplying
