Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum points score for skilled migration to Australia?+
The minimum score to submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect is 65 points. However, the actual score at which invitations are issued is typically much higher — currently 85–95+ for the Subclass 189 (Skilled Independent) and 85+ for most Subclass 190 (Skilled Nominated) programs. Invitation scores vary by occupation and round.
How do I calculate my Australian skilled migration points score?+
Your score is calculated across factors including age, English language ability, Australian and overseas skilled employment, educational qualifications, Australian study, specialist education, professional year, partner skills, community language, regional study, and state or territory nomination. This calculator covers all official DHA criteria.
How many points does state nomination add?+
State or territory nomination under the Subclass 190 visa adds 5 points to your score. Nomination under the Subclass 491 (Skilled Regional) visa adds 15 points. This can significantly improve your chances of receiving an invitation if your base score is not yet competitive.
What English score do I need for 20 points?+
To claim 20 points for Superior English, you need a minimum score of 8 in each of the four bands (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking) on the IELTS, or equivalent scores on the PTE Academic (79+), TOEFL iBT (93+ with specific minimums), or OET (Grade A in all components).
Is this points calculator based on official Australian government criteria?+
Yes. This calculator is based on the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) points test criteria for General Skilled Migration as publicly documented. However, immigration policy can change. Always confirm your points score with a MARA-registered migration agent and check the current DHA points test schedule before submitting an EOI.
