United KingdomAsked by Ifeoma Eze10 July 2026No — the standard UK Student visa requires you to be enrolled in and attending a full-time course. Part-time study is generally not permitted on a Student visa.
When part-time study might be possible:
There is a limited exception for the Student visa: if you are in the final stage of your course and only need to complete a reduced workload to finish (for example, writing a dissertation on a part-time basis), your university may be able to arrange this with UKVI approval.
Who can study part-time:
- Those on a Standard Visitor visa can undertake short recreational courses (up to 30 days) but not academic qualifications
- Those with Indefinite Leave to Remain, British citizenship, or another long-term visa status can study part-time freely
- Those on a Skilled Worker visa may study part-time (as long as it does not contradict their visa conditions)
What if you want to go part-time for personal reasons?
You must speak to your international student office first. Formally reducing your study hours below full-time typically means you no longer meet your visa conditions, and your university is legally required to report this to UKVI, which may result in visa curtailment.
Medical exceptions:
If you need to reduce your study load temporarily due to serious illness, compassionate circumstances, or other genuine reasons, your institution may be able to support a short-term approved interruption without it triggering visa consequences.
Advice: Never reduce your study load without first consulting your institution's international student adviser and understanding the visa implications.
