United KingdomAsked by Chiamaka Eze10 July 2026UK Student visa holders are permitted to work, but with restrictions that depend on where and what you are studying:
During term time:
- Students at universities (degree level, embedded colleges): 20 hours per week maximum
- Students at independent schools or colleges below degree level: 10 hours per week maximum
- Students doing full-time study below degree level at a university or HEI: 10 hours per week
During official vacations (including summer):
- Full-time work permitted — no limit on hours
- This includes summer holidays, Christmas, and Easter breaks
Work placements (sandwich years, clinical placements):
- Integrated work placements that are a mandatory part of your degree can often exceed the 20-hour limit — check your visa conditions and CAS details
On-campus vs off-campus:
The 20-hour limit applies to all work, whether on or off campus. It is not just off-campus work.
What counts as "work":
Paid employment, self-employment, and some volunteer roles that replace paid workers. Unpaid volunteering for genuine not-for-profit organisations generally does not count.
Consequences of exceeding hours:
Breaching work conditions is a serious immigration offence that can result in visa curtailment and affect future UK visa applications.
Not permitted to do:
- Establish or run a business
- Be self-employed (except under very specific circumstances)
- Work as a professional sportsperson or sports coach
- Work as an entertainer
Your visa vignette (stamp) and BRP (Biometric Residence Permit) will state your work conditions. Always read these carefully.
