United KingdomAsked by Adenike Omotosho10 July 2026Yes, you can travel outside the UK and return during your studies on a Student visa. Here is what you need to know:
Short trips (holidays, visiting family):
- You can leave and return to the UK as many times as you like within your visa validity
- Your visa is a multiple-entry visa — no restriction on trips
- Keep proof of your studies (university letter, timetable) in case asked at the border
- Inform your university if you will be absent for more than a few weeks
Extended trips (gaps in study):
- If you are away during term time, you must be on an approved leave of absence — your university must approve this
- Unapproved absence can trigger a UKVI report, which may affect your visa
- Discuss with your international student office before any extended absence
Passport and documentation when re-entering UK:
- Carry your passport, BRP (Biometric Residence Permit), and a letter from your university confirming your enrolment
- At the border, state you are a student returning to study
- Border Force may ask to see your BRP if your visa is a vignette in an older passport
If your visa expires while abroad:
- If you are outside the UK when your visa expires, you cannot re-enter
- Apply for a new Student visa from your home country before returning
During degree completion year:
- Be mindful of returning before term resumes, especially dissertation submission periods
- Ensure your return is well before any critical academic deadlines
Switching to Graduate Route from abroad:
The Graduate Route must be applied for from within the UK — ensure you are back before your student visa expires.
