United KingdomAsked by Nneka Osei10 July 2026To apply for a UK Student visa (previously Tier 4), you must meet the following requirements:
1. Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)
Your university or college must issue you a CAS reference number after you unconditionally accept your offer. The CAS contains details of your course, fees, and English language proficiency.
2. English language
Most applicants need to demonstrate English at B2 level (CEFR) — typically IELTS 5.5–6.5 depending on the course and institution. Your CAS will specify requirements.
3. Financial requirements
You must show you have funds to cover:
- Course fees for the first year (or remaining fees if less than a year)
- Living costs: £1,334/month in London or £1,023/month outside London for up to 9 months
- Money must have been in your account for at least 28 consecutive days before the date of your application
4. ATAS clearance (if required)
If your course involves certain sensitive subjects (advanced engineering, physics, chemistry, nuclear technology, materials science, military technology), you need Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) clearance before applying.
5. Health surcharge (IHS)
Pay the Immigration Health Surcharge: currently £776/year of study. This gives you access to the NHS.
6. Tuberculosis test
If you are from a listed country, you need a TB test certificate from an approved clinic.
7. Passport and biometrics
Apply online through the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) portal. Processing time is typically 3 weeks for applications outside the UK.
