United KingdomAsked by Olumide Bankole10 July 2026If you need more time to complete your studies or are moving to a higher level of study, you will need to extend your UK Student visa. Here is the process:
When to apply:
Apply before your current visa expires. If your visa is about to run out and you apply in time, you can remain in the UK legally while the application is processed (Section 3C leave).
Apply when:
- You are continuing at the same institution (completing a dissertation, retaking exams)
- You are progressing to a higher level of study (e.g., Bachelor's → Master's)
- Your course has been extended
Requirements:
- New CAS from your institution (even if the same institution — new CAS needed for new study period)
- Updated financial evidence (funds in account for 28 consecutive days)
- Current passport
- Biometric Residence Permit (BRP) if you already have one
- TB certificate (if required for your country and not previously provided)
What you need to show for academic progression:
If moving between study levels, you must demonstrate you are progressing (e.g., cannot move from postgraduate back to undergraduate without good reason). UKVI may ask for evidence of academic performance.
Application fee: £490 (from within the UK)
IHS payment: £776/year of the extended stay
Online application: Through the UKVI portal (gov.uk)
Processing time: Usually 3–8 weeks; priority service available
Important: Do not let your visa expire before applying. If it expires and you do not apply, you are overstaying — a serious immigration offence with long-term consequences for future UK visas.
