United KingdomAsked by Yemi Adeyemi10 July 2026Switching from a Student visa to a Skilled Worker visa is one of the most common routes to long-term residence in the UK for international graduates. Here is how it works:
Requirements for a Skilled Worker visa:
1. Job offer from a UK-licensed sponsor: Your employer must hold a Sponsor Licence from the Home Office. Major UK employers are licensed; smaller companies may not be.
2. Job at eligible skill level: The role must be at RQF Level 3 or above (A-level equivalent or higher)
3. Minimum salary: Currently £38,700/year (general threshold) OR the going rate for your specific occupation — whichever is higher. There are lower thresholds for some shortage occupations (check current Immigration Salary List).
4. Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS): Your employer issues this; it contains your job details.
5. English language: Usually already demonstrated from your Student visa.
How to switch:
- Apply online through UKVI from within the UK
- Can switch while on Student visa or Graduate Route visa
- Do NOT travel outside the UK and re-enter on the Student visa to apply — apply before leaving
- Processing: 3–8 weeks (priority available for additional fee)
- Fee: £827 + IHS (£776/year)
Points system:
The Skilled Worker visa uses a points system. You need 70 points from:
- Offer from approved sponsor: 20 pts
- Job at correct skill level: 20 pts
- English: 10 pts
- Salary meeting threshold: 20 pts
Path to ILR: After 5 years on a Skilled Worker visa, you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) — effectively permanent residency.
