United KingdomAsked by Amol Patil10 July 2026The UK Intra-Company Transfer (ICT) visa route allows multinational companies to transfer employees from overseas offices to UK operations. It is not a student route but is relevant to graduates who may work for multinational firms.
Requirements for an ICT visa:
- Employed by an overseas company that is linked to a UK entity (parent, subsidiary, or branch)
- Transferring to work in a skilled role in the UK operation
- Paid at least £48,500/year (or the going rate for your occupation — whichever is higher)
- Employed by the sponsor for at least 12 months before transferring (in most cases)
- The role must be at RQF6 level or above (degree level or equivalent)
ICT Visa vs Skilled Worker visa:
- ICT: For intra-company transfers only; cannot switch to ILR directly (most cannot lead to settlement unless on the Senior or Specialist pathway)
- Skilled Worker: Open to anyone with a UK employer sponsor; leads to ILR after 5 years
Duration: Up to 3 years (extendable to 5 years maximum for most)
What you cannot do on an ICT:
- Take on employment other than with your sponsoring employer
- Switch to Skilled Worker visa while inside the UK in most circumstances
Why this matters for students:
If you work for a company with UK operations, you may be sponsored on an ICT after graduation rather than through the standard Skilled Worker route. However, from a long-term settlement perspective, a Skilled Worker visa is typically more beneficial as it directly leads to ILR and eventually British citizenship.
