New ZealandAsked by Yohannes Tesfaye10 July 2026The Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) is New Zealand's main points-based residency pathway for people with skilled employment or job offers.
How it works:
The SMC uses a points-based Expression of Interest (EOI) system. You submit an EOI and if selected, are invited to apply for residence.
Points are earned for:
- Skilled employment in New Zealand (highest weighted factor — 50–60 points for skilled work)
- Skilled employment outside New Zealand
- Qualifications (NZ or overseas)
- Work experience
- Age (bonus points for 20–39 years)
- Partner qualifications/employment
- New Zealand family members (siblings, adult children)
- Regional employment (working outside Auckland)
Minimum points to be selected: The selection threshold varies. Typically 160–180 points to be selected from the pool, but check current INZ data.
Process:
1. Lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI)
2. EOIs above the selection point are selected in fortnightly rounds
3. If selected, invited to apply for residence (ITA — Invitation to Apply)
4. Lodge full residence application within 4 months
5. Assessment by INZ
What is "skilled employment":
Jobs at ANZSCO Skill Level 1, 2, or 3 typically qualify. Many trade jobs, professional jobs, and management roles qualify.
Graduate pathway: If you studied in NZ and got a job in a skilled role, you can accumulate points quickly. A NZ degree + NZ skilled employment = typically enough points to be selected.
