New ZealandAsked by Oladapo Adekunle10 July 2026You can apply to extend your New Zealand student visa if you need more time to complete your studies or are moving to a higher level of study. Here is the process:
When to apply:
Apply for an extension before your current visa expires. You can apply online while inside New Zealand — you do not need to leave.
Reasons to extend:
- Continuing your current programme (e.g., finishing a dissertation)
- Progressing to a higher qualification (e.g., completing a bachelor's and starting a master's)
- Changing to a different course at the same or a different institution
Requirements:
- New offer of place from your institution (if course changed or new programme)
- Updated financial evidence (funds in account at INZ-required amounts)
- Passport valid for at least 3 months beyond your visa
- Health and character requirements (same as initial application)
- TB certificate if required and not previously provided
Application:
Apply online through Immigration New Zealand at immigration.govt.nz. Create or log into your MyVisa account.
Fee: approximately NZD 375 (check current fee schedule)
Processing: 4–10 weeks typically. Apply early — if your application is submitted before your visa expires and it is still being processed, you have "implied status" allowing you to remain lawfully.
Changing institutions:
You can change to a different institution on your student visa, but INZ recommends informing them and getting a new offer of place letter. If your course changes significantly, a new visa application may be required.
