New ZealandAsked by Florencia Garcia10 July 2026New Zealand offers several pathways to permanent residence for international graduates. Here is the most practical route:
Step 1: Complete your degree in New Zealand
Studying in NZ does not automatically give you residence, but it earns you points and qualifies you for work visas.
Step 2: Get a Post-Study Work Visa (PSWV)
After graduating, apply for a 1–3 year open work visa. Use this time to gain skilled work experience in New Zealand.
Step 3: Gain skilled employment
Find work in a role at ANZSCO Skill Level 1, 2, or 3 (professional, technical, or trade). This is the core of your points for the SMC.
Step 4: Skilled Migrant Category (SMC)
Lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) with points from:
- Skilled employment in NZ (major points — 50–60)
- NZ qualification (bonus points — 50+)
- Age (25–35 optimal — bonus points)
- Work experience
- Regional employment (Auckland exclusion can affect some points)
Typical timeline: Graduate → 6–12 months to find skilled work → Lodge EOI → Get selected (often within 1–2 selection rounds) → Apply for residence → Residence granted.
Green List alternative:
If your occupation is on the Green List Tier 1, you may apply directly for residence with a job offer, bypassing the points-based EOI system entirely. Much faster.
Key advice: Choose your study field wisely. Graduate in a field where you can find skilled NZ employment quickly — health, engineering, IT, education, and trades are high demand.
