New ZealandAsked by Tshidi Molefe10 July 2026The Post-Study Work Visa (PSWV) allows international graduates from New Zealand to work in New Zealand after completing their qualification.
Duration:
- 3-year degree or higher (bachelor's, postgraduate, master's, PhD): 3 years open work rights
- Postgraduate diploma (at least 1 year): 3 years
- Diploma (level 5 or 6, at least 2 years): 3 years
- Shorter courses: 1 year (or length of study, whichever is longer) — may have location restrictions
Open work rights: For most qualifications studied in Auckland or another main centre, the PSWV is an "open" work visa — you can work for any employer, in any role, anywhere in New Zealand.
Regional restriction (post-study outside Auckland): If you studied outside Auckland, you may have an open post-study work visa regardless of location.
How to apply:
- Apply online through Immigration New Zealand
- Apply before your student visa expires
- Duration of PSWV cannot exceed 3 years total
Why it matters for PR:
The Post-Study Work Visa period is your opportunity to accumulate skilled work experience in New Zealand, which is the primary pathway to residence through the Skilled Migrant Category (SMC) or the Green List (direct to residence for highly in-demand roles).
Partner of a student or PSWV holder: Partners of student visa or post-study work visa holders typically receive an open work visa for the same duration.
