New ZealandAsked by Adannaya Igwe10 July 2026English language requirements for New Zealand student visas depend on the level of your course. Here are typical requirements:
For Immigration New Zealand (visa purposes):
Bachelor's level and above:
- IELTS Academic: Overall 6.0, with no band below 5.5
- TOEFL iBT: 60+
- PTE Academic: 50+
Postgraduate and graduate programmes:
- IELTS: 6.5 overall, no band below 6.0 (many programmes require this)
- TOEFL: 79–90+
University-specific requirements:
Individual institutions may set higher requirements than INZ minimums:
- University of Auckland, Victoria University: Often require IELTS 6.5 or higher for most programmes
- Some programmes (law, medicine, education): IELTS 7.0+
Pathway programmes (foundation/bridging):
If your English is not yet at the required level, most universities offer foundation programmes or English pathway programmes. These are 1-semester or 1-year programmes to bridge to degree entry.
Exemptions (typical):
- Citizens of English-speaking countries (UK, Ireland, Australia, Canada, USA)
- Completion of 2+ years of study at an English-medium institution
- Previous NZQA-recognised qualification from an English-speaking environment
English test validity: Most institutions require tests taken within 2 years of your application date.
NZCEL (New Zealand Certificate in English Language): INZ-recognised test available within New Zealand, sometimes accepted in place of IELTS/TOEFL for immigration purposes.
