New ZealandAsked by Sione T.6 July 2026For a New Zealand Student Visa, you must demonstrate that you have sufficient funds to support yourself throughout your period of study. Immigration New Zealand requires evidence of at least NZD $15,000 per year for living costs.
In addition to living costs, you must also show that you have paid your tuition fees (or have the funds to pay them), and that you have enough money for a return airfare to your home country (or enough to purchase one when needed).
Acceptable financial evidence includes bank statements from the past 3 months, a bank guarantee, term deposits, scholarship letters, or evidence of a sponsor's financial support. If a family member or sponsor is funding your studies, you will need both their bank statements and a signed support letter.
For longer courses (2 years or more), some students use a combination of savings plus demonstrated income from part-time work, but savings must be sufficient at the time of application.
New Zealand also requires students to have or obtain adequate health and travel insurance. Some institutions provide this, while others require students to arrange their own policy.
Living costs can be higher in Auckland compared to other cities. Factor in accommodation (student halls, shared housing), food, transport, and personal expenses when planning your budget. NZD $15,000 per year is a minimum guideline — most students find they need somewhat more depending on lifestyle and location.
