GermanyAsked by Vivek Sharma10 July 2026The EU Blue Card is Germany's premium work and residence permit for highly skilled non-EU workers. It comes with faster permanent residence rights and benefits for holders.
Eligibility:
- University degree (bachelor's level or higher) — from Germany or abroad (must be recognised)
- Job offer from a German employer
- Salary at or above the threshold:
- General: €45,300 gross/year (2024)
- Shortage occupations (IT, engineering, medicine, mathematics): €41,041.80 gross/year
Benefits of the EU Blue Card over a standard work permit:
- Permanent residence after 33 months with basic German (A1) or 21 months with B1 German
- Easier to bring family — spouse gets work permit immediately
- Higher mobility within the EU (after 18 months, easier to work in other EU countries)
- More prestigious — smoother bank, rental applications
After graduation in Germany:
- If your salary meets the threshold, apply directly for an EU Blue Card instead of a standard job seeker visa
- You will not need to go through the 18-month job search phase
Changing jobs on Blue Card:
- First 2 years: Changing employers requires approval from immigration authority
- After 2 years: Can change freely
Path to citizenship:
EU Blue Card holders can apply for German citizenship after 6 years (or 5 years with strong integration evidence, or even faster in exceptional cases). German citizenship allows residence in all EU countries.
