United StatesAsked by Anastasia Kovachevska10 July 2026Technically, you need a Social Security Number (SSN) to legally receive wages, but you can start working on campus before your SSN arrives — the key is applying for it promptly.
The timeline:
1. Your DSO confirms you have on-campus employment
2. You begin working (your employer can pay you)
3. You apply for an SSN at your local Social Security Administration office
4. SSN arrives in 2–6 weeks
5. You provide your SSN to your employer and they update payroll records
How to apply for an SSN:
Documents needed:
- Passport with F-1 visa
- I-20 with DSO signature (dated within the last 12 months, authorising your work)
- I-94 (download from cbp.dhs.gov)
- Employment letter from your on-campus employer (stating your position, start date, and that you are an F-1 student with work authorisation)
- Letter from your International Student Office confirming your enrollment
- Visit the SSA office in person — apply within the first few weeks of starting work
SSN for off-campus employment (CPT/OPT):
Same process — bring your EAD card (for OPT) or CPT-endorsed I-20, plus employer letter.
Why it matters:
SSN is used for:
- Tax filing (you must file a US tax return even as a student)
- Banking (some banks require it)
- Credit history
- Employment verification
ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number): If you are not eligible for an SSN but need to file taxes, apply for an ITIN through the IRS. This is for non-work tax purposes.
