United StatesAsked by Yemi Balogun10 July 2026Yes, F-1 students can travel internationally and return to the USA during their studies, but there are specific requirements you must meet before leaving:
Before you travel — required documents:
1. Valid F-1 visa stamp: Your visa must be valid for re-entry. If your visa stamp has expired, you must get a new one from a US Embassy abroad before returning (you cannot renew inside the USA).
2. Valid I-20 with travel signature: Your DSO must sign the travel endorsement on page 2 of your I-20. Signatures are valid for 6–12 months (check your I-20). Request a new one if it is about to expire.
3. Valid passport: Must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your return date.
4. Proof of enrollment: Carry an enrollment verification letter from your university.
5. Financial evidence: Be prepared to show bank statements if asked.
During summer or semester breaks:
You can travel freely during official school vacations. You still need the documents above.
During the semester:
You can travel but must maintain full-time enrollment remotely or return before classes resume. Do not miss required coursework.
Special case — travel to Canada, Mexico, and adjacent islands:
If your F-1 visa has expired but your I-20 is valid and you are in valid status, automatic revalidation may apply for short trips (under 30 days) to Canada, Mexico, or adjacent islands — you may be able to re-enter without renewing your visa stamp. However, this does not always apply — check current USCIS rules and consult your DSO first.
On OPT: Travel rules are different during OPT — always check with your DSO before international travel.
