United StatesAsked by Obiageli Ezenwachi10 July 2026The relationship between F-1 visa status and online study is an important and sometimes confusing area. Here are the rules:
You cannot enter the USA solely to study online:
If your programme is entirely online with no in-person component, you cannot use an F-1 visa to enter the USA. The F-1 visa is for in-person academic study at a US institution.
Online coursework while in the USA on F-1:
F-1 students in the USA may take some online courses as part of their programme, but regulations limit this:
- You must maintain full-time enrollment: typically 12 credits for undergrads, 9 for grad students
- Only one online course (up to 3 credits) can count toward your full-time requirement per semester (unless the programme is specifically approved as a hybrid/online programme)
- Exception: Some accredited distance learning programmes are SEVP-approved for F-1 — confirm with your school
COVID-era flexibility: During 2020–2021, USCIS temporarily allowed fully online programmes for F-1 students. That exception has ended.
Studying from outside the USA:
If you are outside the USA and enrolled in a US university that allows online study:
- You do not need an F-1 visa to study remotely from your home country
- Your SEVIS record should reflect your absence
- Notify your DSO if you are studying remotely for a semester
Re-entering the USA after online study abroad:
When you return to in-person study, you need a valid I-20 and valid F-1 visa. If your programme was paused due to online study, your DSO must reactivate your SEVIS record.
Always coordinate with your International Student Office for any non-standard enrollment situation.
