IrelandAsked by Chukwuemeka Obi10 July 2026Extending your student permission in Ireland is done through the Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS) and is straightforward if you are in good standing:
Renewal types:
1. INIS online registration renewal: If you are a student already registered with INIS (holding an Irish Residence Permit — IRP card), renew your registration before the expiry date.
2. New visa application: If your current visa has expired and you have a new course, you may need a new visa.
For IRP card renewal (in Dublin):
- Register online for an appointment at the INIS registration office
- Dublin city: Appointments at the Burgh Quay registration office (extremely high demand — book well in advance)
- Outside Dublin: Visit your local Garda registration office (smaller queues outside the capital)
Documents for renewal:
- Current IRP card
- Passport
- New letter from your institution confirming ongoing enrollment
- Evidence of fee payment for the next academic year
- Evidence of financial capacity (bank statements)
- Private health insurance certificate
Timeline: Register/renew before your current permission expires. Do not let it lapse — an overstay has serious consequences for future Irish visas.
Post-study permission renewal:
If you have completed your studies and are applying for the Third Level Graduate Programme (post-study work permission), apply to INIS with your degree certificate, current permission documentation, and financial evidence.
Online Registration System (ONR):
INIS has moved toward online renewals for eligible categories — check immigration.ie for current procedures.
