Study Permit Consultants in Canada

A Canadian Study Permit allows foreign nationals to study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada. Most programs of 6 months or longer at a DLI require a study permit. It is also the first step for many students planning to transition to the Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) and eventually permanent residence.

Why use an RCIC for Study Permit?

Study permit refusals often cite insufficient funds or inability to satisfy the officer that the applicant will leave Canada after studies. An RCIC helps you frame your application compellingly, strengthen your financial documentation, and address any risk factors in your history.

Frequently asked questions — Study Permit

Can I work in Canada on a Study Permit?

Yes. If you are enrolled full-time at a DLI and studying at the post-secondary level, you can work up to 20 hours per week during the academic session and full-time during scheduled breaks. This changed in late 2024 — check current IRCC guidance for the latest hours.

What is the Student Direct Stream (SDS)?

SDS is a faster study permit processing stream available to students from 14 countries (including India, China, Brazil, Morocco, Pakistan, Philippines, and others). It requires upfront proof of funds (GIC), a language test result, and payment of your first year's tuition. Processing is typically within 20 days.

Can a study permit lead to permanent residence?

Yes. Graduating from a DLI qualifies you for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) of up to 3 years. Canadian work experience gained on a PGWP can then qualify you for the Canadian Experience Class (CEC) under Express Entry. Many international students use this pathway to obtain Canadian PR.

What happens if my Study Permit is refused?

You can reapply, but you should identify and address the reason for refusal. Common reasons include insufficient funds, weak ties to home country, or missing documents. An RCIC reviews the refusal letter and helps you build a stronger application.

Do I need to apply for a new Study Permit if I change schools?

Not necessarily, but you must notify IRCC of the change. If you are transferring to a new DLI in the same academic stream, your current study permit may remain valid. Changing to a significantly different program or level may require a new permit. An RCIC can advise based on your specific situation.
