Who Leverage Edu are

Leverage Edu is a technology-led study abroad platform founded in April 2017 by Akshay Chaturvedi. It is venture-backed rather than a traditional agent network — around $73 million raised across ten rounds, including a $40 million Series C in 2023 that valued it near $150 million. It works primarily with students from India, Nigeria, Nepal and other emerging markets, and bundles counselling with education loans, accommodation and money transfer.

Leverage Edu made the process of applying to Canada much less stressful than I expected. The staff were patient with my questions even when I asked the same thing more than once. They were upfront about processing times, which helped me plan. My only feedback would be that the office can get busy and in-person appointments are sometimes hard to schedule. Overall a positive experience.

Worth knowing

  • ETS — the organisation that owns the TOEFL test — is an investor, having led the 2023 Series C. This is the same structural pattern as IDP and IELTS: the test provider has a financial interest in the agent guiding students toward the test.
  • Venture-funded and growth-oriented, which is unusual in this sector and shapes how it operates: heavier on technology and volume, lighter on physical branch networks.
  • Bundles education loans, forex and accommodation alongside placement, so it earns from several points in a student journey rather than one.

Five questions to ask before you sign anything

These apply to Leverage Edu and to every other agent. A good counsellor will answer all five without hesitating.

1
Which universities do you actually represent?
Agents earn commission from partner institutions. If your shortlist is not on their partner list, they have no financial reason to help you apply there — and may steer you elsewhere.
2
What do you charge me, in writing?
Most large agents are free to students. If anyone asks for a placement fee, get it itemised in writing before paying anything, and be clear what happens to it if your visa is refused.
3
Who prepares my visa application, and who signs it?
You are legally responsible for what is submitted in your name. Never let anyone submit documents you have not read, and never sign a blank form.
4
What is your refusal rate for students like me?
A good agent will answer honestly or tell you they do not track it. Anyone promising a guaranteed visa is not being straight with you — no agent can guarantee a government decision.
5
Can I speak to a student you placed on my course last year?
Reluctance here is a signal. Genuine references are the cheapest due diligence you can do.

Frequently asked questions about Leverage Edu

What is Leverage Edu? +
Leverage Edu is a technology-led study abroad platform founded in April 2017 by Akshay Chaturvedi and headquartered in New Delhi. It works mainly with students from India, Nigeria, Nepal and other emerging markets, combining counselling with education loans, accommodation and money transfer.
Is Leverage Edu free for students? +
Counselling is generally free because Leverage Edu earns a commission from partner universities when you enrol — the standard education agent model. It also earns from referring students to education loans and money-transfer services, so it is reasonable to ask whether a recommended product is the best one for you or the one that pays them.
Who owns or funds Leverage Edu? +
It is venture-backed, having raised roughly $73 million across ten rounds. Its 2023 Series C of $40 million was led by ETS — the organisation that owns the TOEFL test — alongside Blume Ventures, DSG Consumer Partners and Kaizenvest, valuing the company near $150 million.
Does the ETS investment matter? +
It is worth knowing about. ETS owns TOEFL, and it holds a stake in a company that advises students on which English test to take. That is the same structural pattern as IDP co-owning IELTS. It does not make the advice wrong, but check whether your target universities accept a cheaper or more convenient alternative before booking a test.
