Many students book their IELTS test without realising there are two completely different versions β and choosing the wrong one means the result is useless for your application, regardless of the score.
Here is a clear breakdown of the two versions and exactly which one you need.
What Is the Difference Between Academic and General Training?
Both versions test the same four skills β Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking β and the Listening and Speaking components are identical. The difference is in the Reading and Writing sections.
IELTS Academic:
The Reading section contains three long, complex academic texts from journals, books, and magazines. The Writing section requires you to describe data (a graph, chart, table, or diagram) in Task 1, and write an argumentative essay in Task 2.
IELTS General Training:
The Reading section uses everyday texts such as advertisements, workplace notices, and general interest articles. Task 1 in Writing requires a letter (formal, semi-formal, or informal) rather than a data description.
The Academic version is harder β particularly the Reading and Writing components. Achieving the same band score in Academic requires a stronger performance than in General Training.
Which Version Do You Need for a Student Visa?
Australia (Subclass 500): Universities and other higher education providers require IELTS Academic. IELTS General Training is not accepted for university-level study in Australia.
United Kingdom (Student visa): For entry to UK universities and most higher education courses, IELTS Academic UKVI is required. IELTS General Training is not accepted for degree-level study. Note that you need UKVI-approved tests taken at UKVI-approved test centres β not all IELTS sessions qualify.
Canada (Study Permit): Canadian universities and colleges require IELTS Academic. Some vocational colleges may accept General Training, but this is institution-specific β confirm directly with the institution.
USA (F-1 Visa): Most US universities accept IELTS Academic. IELTS General Training is not typically accepted.
Warning: If your institution requires IELTS Academic and you take General Training, your score report will show which version you sat. Submitting a General Training result for an Academic requirement will result in your application being rejected or your offer being withdrawn.
Which Version Do You Need for a Migration Visa?
Australia (Skilled migration β subclass 189, 190, 491, 186, 482 etc.): Both Academic and General Training are accepted for points-based skilled migration. Most applicants choose General Training as it is somewhat easier.
Australia (Partner/family visas, citizenship): General Training is accepted and commonly used.
UK (Skilled Worker visa): IELTS General Training UKVI is the standard requirement for most UK work visas, though Academic is also accepted.
Canada (Express Entry, PNP, family sponsorship): Both versions are accepted for immigration purposes. Most applicants choose General Training.
New Zealand (Skilled Migrant): Both versions accepted.
Can You Take Both Versions?
Yes. There is no rule preventing you from taking both versions. Some applicants take Academic for their student visa and then take General Training later when transitioning to permanent residency β though in most cases, immigration authorities accept Academic scores for migration purposes as well.
IELTS UKVI vs Standard IELTS
For UK applications specifically, there is another layer of complexity: even if you choose the right version (Academic or General Training), it must be a UKVI-approved test taken at a UKVI-approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) centre.
Standard IELTS tests (taken at non-UKVI centres) are not accepted for UK visa applications, even though they are identical in format and difficulty. Check the list of approved test centres on the UKVI website before booking.
Which Version to Choose: Quick Reference
| Your purpose | Version needed |
|---|---|
| University degree (AU, UK, CA, USA) | IELTS Academic |
| Australian skilled migration | Either (General Training common) |
| UK Skilled Worker visa | IELTS General Training UKVI |
| Canadian immigration (Express Entry) | Either (General Training common) |
| Australian partner/family visa | Either (General Training common) |
| TAFE / vocational college (AU) | Check with institution |
Booking the Right Test
When booking through the British Council or IDP, you will be asked to select your test version. Select carefully β tests cannot be converted after booking. If you are using IELTS for both a student visa and a future migration pathway, check whether Academic results will be accepted for the migration purpose (most countries accept Academic for both) before deciding which version to take.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use IELTS Academic for an Australian skilled migration visa?
Yes. Australia accepts both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training for skilled migration visas (subclass 189, 190, 491, etc.). Most applicants choose General Training as the Reading and Writing sections are considered somewhat easier, but Academic is equally valid.
What is the difference between IELTS UKVI and standard IELTS?
IELTS UKVI is an IELTS test approved by UK Visas and Immigration, taken at a UKVI-approved Secure English Language Test centre. The test format and difficulty are identical to standard IELTS, but for UK visa applications you must specifically book a UKVI-approved test β a standard IELTS test will not be accepted.
Is IELTS General Training easier than Academic?
Generally yes β the Reading texts in General Training use more everyday language than the complex academic articles in IELTS Academic, and the Task 1 letter is typically considered less demanding than the Academic data description. However, the Listening and Speaking sections are identical in both versions.
