IELTS vs PTE vs TOEFL: Which English Test Should International Students Take?

15 February 2026·8 min read·By ConsultancyCheck

Choosing between IELTS, PTE Academic, and TOEFL iBT? This guide explains which test is accepted where, which is easiest for your background, and how to prepare.

Whether you are applying to study in Australia, the UK, Canada, or the USA, you will almost certainly need an English language test. The three main options are IELTS, PTE Academic, and TOEFL iBT — but they are not equal in all contexts. Here is how to choose the right one.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

Format: Paper-based or computer-based | 4 sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking (face-to-face with an examiner)

Two versions:

Accepted by: UK (Tier 4 / Student visa — must be UKVI version), Australia, Canada, New Zealand, USA, and virtually every English-speaking university globally

Score range: 1.0–9.0 band score (most universities require 6.0–7.5 depending on program)

Best for: Students applying to UK, Australia, or New Zealand. The face-to-face speaking test is preferred by students who perform better in conversation than in front of a screen.

Key note for UK: You cannot use standard IELTS for a UK student visa. You must take IELTS for UKVI at an approved centre. Many students fail to realise this and have to retest.

PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic)

Format: Fully computer-based | Scored by AI | Results typically within 48 hours

Accepted by: Australia (widely accepted, often preferred), New Zealand, Canada, many UK universities, USA (selected)

Score range: 10–90 (most Australian university programs require 50–65; visa requires 50 minimum)

Best for: Students who are more comfortable with computers, test quickly and confidently, and want fast results. PTE is notably popular with Indian and South Asian students for Australian visa applications.

Key advantage: AI scoring means no examiner bias, and results in 48 hours rather than 13 days for IELTS.

Key limitation: Not accepted for UK Student Visa applications.

TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language — Internet-Based Test)

Format: Fully computer-based | All tasks are academic in style

Accepted by: USA, Canada, Australia, many European universities

Score range: 0–120 (most universities require 80–100)

Best for: Students applying to US and Canadian universities. TOEFL's reading and writing tasks are closely modelled on US academic English, making it the natural choice for US-bound students.

Key limitation: Not accepted for UK Student Visa. Less commonly accepted in Australia compared to IELTS or PTE.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use PTE for a UK student visa?

No. The UK Home Office only accepts IELTS for UKVI (Academic), taken at an approved UKVI test centre. Standard IELTS and PTE are not accepted for UK visa applications.

Which is easier: IELTS or PTE?

It depends on your strengths. PTE is fully computer-based with AI scoring and faster results. IELTS has a face-to-face speaking component. Most South Asian students find PTE scoring more consistent. Try a practice test for each before deciding.

How long is an IELTS score valid for?

IELTS scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. Most visa applications require a valid test taken within the 2 years before your application.
