Some consultancies offer to "arrange" high test scores or provide genuine-looking fake certificates. Here is why this destroys your visa chances, carries criminal penalties, and how to spot consultancies making these offers.

"We can arrange your IELTS 7.0. Don't worry about the test."

If an education consultancy has said anything like this to you, leave immediately. What they are describing is immigration fraud β€” and the consequences for you, not them, are the ones that matter.

What Is the Fake Test Score Scam?

There are several variations of this scheme:

Variant 1: The "proxy test" offer

The consultancy claims they can arrange for a high-scoring substitute to sit the IELTS or PTE test on your behalf, using your identity documents. You pay USD $500–$2,000 for this "service."

Variant 2: The forged certificate

The consultancy produces a convincing forgery of an IELTS or PTE Academic score report β€” correct logos, correct format, plausible scores. You submit this with your visa or university application.

Variant 3: The "system hack" claim

The consultancy claims they have contacts inside British Council or Pearson VUE who can "adjust" your scores in the official database. You pay β€” and receive nothing, or receive a real certificate with scores that were never legitimately achieved.

Warning

Warning: Every single IELTS and PTE Academic score can be verified directly by universities and immigration authorities. UK Visas and Immigration, Home Affairs (Australia), and IRCC (Canada) have access to the test provider databases and routinely check scores during visa processing.

Why This Destroys Your Case

When a fraudulent score is detected:

  • Your visa application is refused
  • You are typically banned from re-applying for student visas for 3–10 years
  • Your details are flagged across Five Eyes immigration databases (Australia, UK, Canada, USA, New Zealand share fraud intelligence)
  • If you are already in the country, you face visa cancellation and removal
  • In some jurisdictions, you face criminal charges for document fraud

The consultancy does not face these consequences. You do.

How Immigration Authorities Detect Fake Scores

Detection rates are higher than most students assume:

Direct verification: Universities and immigration offices send batch verification requests to IELTS/PTE/TOEFL systems. Every score in every application is checked against the official record.

Score pattern anomalies: An IELTS score of 8.5 overall submitted alongside evidence of basic written English in the application form triggers review.

Biometric cross-checking: Test centres capture biometric data (photo, fingerprint). If the person who sat the test does not match your visa biometrics, it is detected.

Whistleblower reports: Consultancy staff and competitors routinely report known fraudsters to authorities.

1

What a Legitimate Score Preparation Looks Like

A legitimate consultancy or education provider will:

  • Help you understand which test (IELTS vs PTE vs TOEFL vs OET) suits your strengths
  • Recommend reputable preparation courses, practice materials, and tutors
  • Advise you on how many test attempts to budget for
  • Help you understand band requirements for specific courses

They will never offer to "arrange" a score or suggest the test can be bypassed.

2

Minimum Score Requirements Actually Required

Many students pursue fake scores because they believe their real score is too low. But minimum requirements are often lower than students fear:

  • Australia student visa: no IELTS minimum β€” but most universities require 6.0–6.5 overall
  • UK Student visa: IELTS UKVI 4.0–6.5 depending on course level
  • Canada study permit: no federal minimum β€” institution sets requirement (usually IELTS 6.0–6.5)

If your score is slightly below the university minimum, many institutions offer conditional offers with English pathway programmes β€” a legitimate route that does not involve fraud.

What to Do If a Consultancy Makes This Offer

  • Refuse immediately and leave or hang up
  • Do not pay anything
  • Report the consultancy to: OMARA (Australia), OISC (UK), CICC (Canada), or your national immigration authority
  • Leave a review on ConsultancyCheck warning other students
  • If you have already paid for a "arranged score" service and received nothing, report as fraud to your bank and local police

The Long-Term Cost of a Short-Term Shortcut

Students who attempt to use fraudulent test scores β€” even when proposed by a consultancy β€” face the possibility of being permanently barred from studying in English-speaking countries. The long-term cost of being caught vastly exceeds the cost of taking the test more times or spending more time on preparation.

There is no shortcut worth a 10-year ban.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can universities and immigration really detect fake IELTS scores?

Yes. IELTS, PTE Academic, TOEFL and other major test providers have verification systems that universities and immigration authorities access directly. Batch verification checks are routine during visa processing and university admissions. Detection rates are much higher than most students assume.

What happens if I submitted a fake English test certificate?

If detected during visa processing, your application will be refused and you will typically face a multi-year ban from reapplying. If detected after you have entered the country, your visa can be cancelled and you may face removal and criminal charges. The consequences apply to you β€” not to the consultancy that suggested it.

What if my IELTS score is too low for my target university?

Many universities offer conditional offers with English pathway programmes (pre-sessional English courses) that allow you to meet the language requirement through study rather than waiting for a higher test score. Some institutions also accept alternative tests like PTE Academic or Duolingo, where students sometimes find it easier to achieve their target score.
