Scholastic Assessment Test — Complete Guide

The SAT, administered by College Board, is one of the most widely used undergraduate admissions tests. It is primarily used for US college admissions but is also accepted internationally, including by some Australian and UK universities.

Why SAT is important

🎓

US University Admissions

The SAT is a core component of US undergraduate applications and is used by most US colleges and universities.

  • Required or accepted by the majority of US colleges
  • Scores of 1400+ competitive for top-ranked universities
  • Strong scores can offset a lower GPA in some cases
💰

Scholarships

Many US universities and private foundations use SAT scores as a criterion for merit-based scholarships.

  • National Merit Scholarship uses PSAT/SAT scores
  • Many private scholarships have minimum SAT requirements
  • High scores can unlock significant financial awards
🌏

International Recognition

SAT scores are recognised by some Australian, UK, and Canadian universities as an alternative to local admissions tests.

  • Some Australian universities accept SAT for direct entry
  • UK universities consider strong SAT scores favourably
  • Useful for students applying across multiple countries

How to prepare for SAT

1
Use Khan Academy's free SAT prep
College Board and Khan Academy offer official free SAT practice with personalised recommendations. This is the best free resource available.
2
Understand the adaptive format
The Digital SAT adapts difficulty between modules. A strong first module leads to harder (higher-scoring) questions in the second. Aim to perform well from the start.
3
Practise under timed conditions
Time pressure is a major factor in SAT performance. Practise full sections under strict time limits from early in your preparation.
4
Focus on Reading & Writing context questions
Most Reading & Writing questions test your ability to interpret meaning in context, not memorise grammar rules. Practise passage-based reasoning.
5
Calculator strategy for Maths
A calculator is now permitted for all Maths questions. Know when to use it efficiently and when mental maths is faster.

Frequently asked questions

Is the SAT accepted in Australia?
Some Australian universities accept SAT scores as part of international student applications. However, most Australian universities use their own entry requirements (ATAR or equivalent). Check directly with your target institution.
How long is an SAT score valid?
Most US universities accept SAT scores taken within 5 years, though some have no time limit. For Australian institutions, check their specific policy.
SAT vs ACT — which should I take?
Both are accepted by virtually all US universities. SAT is stronger in evidence-based reasoning; ACT has a Science section and a slightly faster pace. Take a practice test for each to see which suits you.
Can I take the SAT internationally?
Yes — the Digital SAT is available at authorised test centres worldwide. International students can register through the College Board website.
