CanadaAsked by Abena M.6 July 2026The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) is an open work permit available to international graduates of eligible Canadian institutions. It allows you to work for any Canadian employer in any job, in any province or territory — with no restrictions on occupation or employer.
The length of your PGWP depends on your program of study. If your program was 8 months to less than 2 years, your PGWP is valid for the same length as your program. If your program was 2 years or longer, you receive the maximum PGWP of 3 years.
The PGWP is a once-in-a-lifetime permit — you can only receive one. It cannot be extended, so planning your path to permanent residency within the PGWP period is important.
To be eligible, you must have studied full-time at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) with PGWP eligibility, completed a program of at least 8 months, and apply within 180 days of receiving written confirmation of completion (usually your transcript or degree certificate).
Since November 2024, students in college programs in certain fields of study may face additional restrictions. Students in programs not aligned with high-demand fields (such as trades, technology, healthcare, agriculture, and STEM) may receive a shorter PGWP.
Work experience gained on a PGWP can count toward Canadian Experience Class (CEC) Express Entry, making it one of the most direct pathways to Canadian permanent residency.
