Improving your IELTS score requires targeted preparation. Here is an effective approach:
Understand the test structure first:
IELTS Academic has four sections: Listening (30 min), Reading (60 min), Writing (60 min), Speaking (11–14 min). Each section requires different skills and preparation strategies.
Target your weakest band:
Most people need a minimum score in ALL bands. Identify your lowest area and focus there first. A common pattern: strong Reading and Listening but weaker Writing and Speaking.
Effective preparation strategies:
Reading: Practice with official IELTS Academic Reading test papers (from British Council, IDP, or Cambridge IELTS books). Practise all three passage types and question types. Time yourself strictly.
Listening: Listen to English daily — BBC, podcasts, documentaries. Practise IELTS listening recordings and learn to write answers while listening simultaneously.
Writing: This improves slowest. For Task 1 (academic): practise describing graphs, charts, maps, and diagrams using specific vocabulary. For Task 2 (essay): practise 4-paragraph academic essays. Get your writing corrected by a tutor or use AI to assess structure and coherence.
Speaking: Practise with a language partner or tutor. Record yourself answering Part 2 (2-minute individual long-turn). Focus on fluency over vocabulary — keep talking.
