CanadaAsked by Kuldeep Mann10 July 2026If your study permit is expiring and you are still enrolled in your programme, you must apply to extend it before it expires. Here is the process:
When to apply:
Apply at least 30 days before your current permit expires. However, IRCC recommends applying much earlier (90–120 days) given current processing times.
Maintained status (implied status):
If you apply for an extension before your current permit expires, you can continue studying under 'maintained status' while your application is pending — even if your permit expires during processing.
How to apply:
1. Log in to your IRCC secure account
2. Select 'Apply to Change Conditions, Extend or Remain in Canada as a Student'
3. Upload required documents:
- Proof of enrolment (current transcripts and letter from institution)
- Proof of financial support (updated bank statements)
- Copy of current study permit
- Passport copy
4. Pay the application fee: CAD 150
Processing time: Currently 4–8 weeks. Check IRCC's website for current estimates.
If your permit has already expired:
If more than 90 days have passed since your permit expired and you have not applied, you must restore your status — this is a different application (Restoration of Temporary Resident Status) with additional requirements and fees.
Documents you will always need:
- Current letter of enrolment/acceptance from your DLI
- Transcripts showing you are in good academic standing
- Proof of sufficient funds
- Passport with validity beyond your requested study period
Do not wait until the last minute — processing backlogs can cause serious complications.
