CanadaAsked by Gurpreet Kaur10 July 2026The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) allows international graduates to work in Canada after completing their studies. It is one of the most valuable benefits of studying in Canada. Here are the eligibility requirements:
1. Graduated from an eligible institution: You must have studied at a public post-secondary institution (university, college, CEGEP) OR a private institution authorised to grant degrees in Canada. Private colleges and ESL schools generally do NOT qualify.
2. Full-time study: You must have studied full-time for the majority of your programme.
3. Programme length:
- 8 months to less than 2 years of study: PGWP valid for the same length as your programme
- 2 years or more of study: PGWP valid for 3 years
4. Apply within 180 days of graduation: You must apply within 180 days of receiving your final marks or official notification of programme completion.
5. Valid study permit: Your study permit must have been valid at some point during your studies.
6. English/French requirement (new as of 2024): You need CLB/NCLC 7 in English or French to be eligible for a PGWP.
What you can do on a PGWP:
- Work for any Canadian employer, in any occupation, anywhere in Canada
- Work full-time, part-time, or in any combination
- It is an open work permit — no restrictions on employer or job type
What it is NOT:
- It is not permanent residency
- It is not renewable — once it expires, you must apply for a different status
Use your PGWP period to gain Canadian work experience, which is valuable for Express Entry and Provincial Nominee Programs.
