CanadaAsked by Hardeep Brar10 July 2026Work rights for international students in Canada have been updated. Here is the current position:
Off-campus work (most students):
- During regular academic sessions: 20 hours per week maximum
- During scheduled breaks (summer, winter, reading week): No limit — can work full-time
Note on the 2022–2024 temporary policy: There was a temporary period where the 20-hour limit was lifted entirely. This has since reverted. Always check IRCC's website for the most current rules, as they do change.
On-campus work:
- No restriction on hours — you can work full-time on campus
- No work permit needed for on-campus work
- Examples: library, cafeteria, research assistant, TA positions
Co-op/internship:
- If your programme has a mandatory co-op component, you need a separate co-op work permit — this allows full-time work during placement terms
- Does not count against your off-campus 20-hour limit
Who does NOT need a work permit to work on campus:
- Study permit holders are automatically authorised to work on campus without a separate permit
Who qualifies for off-campus work:
- Must be a full-time student at a DLI
- Study permit must include a condition allowing off-campus work
- Must be a student in good standing
Working without proper authorisation is a serious violation that can affect your study permit, future work permits, and immigration applications. Do not risk it.
