Can I take a gap year from my Australian university while on a student visa?

Taking a gap year (suspending your studies) while on an Australian student visa is possible in limited circumstances, but it is not as simple as it sounds. Your visa is tied to your enrolment, so withdrawing or suspending without proper approval can put your visa at risk.

When suspension is allowed without breaching your visa:
- Medical circumstances: Supported by medical certificate, approved by your institution
- Compassionate or compelling circumstances: Death/serious illness of immediate family, natural disasters, or other significant events
- Academic or institutional reasons: Course restructuring, failed subjects requiring a break

Process:
1. Apply to your institution's international student office for a leave of absence (LOA) or formal suspension
2. The institution assesses whether it meets the 'compassionate and compelling circumstances' threshold under the ESOS Act
3. If approved, they report the suspension to the Department of Home Affairs via PRISMS
4. Your visa typically remains valid during an approved suspension

What you cannot do:
- Simply stop attending class without formal approval
- Take a gap year for personal travel or work without a compelling reason
- Extend your gap year indefinitely — institutions will typically approve a maximum of 1 semester at a time

If your visa expires during suspension:
If the suspension extends your course end date beyond your current visa expiry, you will need to apply for a new student visa.

Alternative approach: Some students complete their course, exit on a 485 visa, use the post-study period for travel/work, then return to study at a later date.
