AustraliaAsked by Kabir Hossain10 July 2026The Australian Government sets a financial capacity requirement that you must demonstrate when applying for a student visa. As of the current financial year, the amounts are:
Tuition fees: You must show you can cover your first year of tuition fees (or remaining fees if less than a year). This amount varies by institution and course — typically AUD 20,000–45,000 per year for undergraduate or postgraduate programmes.
Living costs: AUD 29,710 per year for the primary student.
Additional for family members:
- Spouse or partner: AUD 10,441 per year
- Each dependent child: AUD 4,449 per year
Airfare: You need to show you can cover return airfare, approximately AUD 2,000–4,000 depending on your home country.
So in total, a single student studying a course costing AUD 35,000/year needs to demonstrate approximately AUD 65,000–70,000 in accessible funds (tuition + living + airfare).
How to prove it:
- Bank statements (ideally showing the funds for at least 3–6 months)
- Fixed deposit certificates
- Scholarship letters covering fees and/or living costs
- Financial sponsorship letter with supporting bank statements from sponsor
- Loan approval letters from financial institutions
Tips:
- Funds should be in your name or your sponsor's name
- Avoid large unexplained deposits immediately before the application — visa officers look for genuine, sustained financial capacity
- Partial scholarships reduce how much cash you need to show
