AustraliaAsked by Selin Yilmaz10 July 2026Australian student visa (subclass 500) applications are refused for several common reasons. Understanding these can help you avoid mistakes:
1. Failure to demonstrate genuine student intention (GS)
The single most common refusal reason. The visa officer must be satisfied you are a genuine student — that studying is your primary purpose. Weak study plans, poor explanation of why you chose Australia or that specific institution, or a study plan inconsistent with your background raises red flags.
2. Insufficient financial evidence
Not showing enough funds, using unreliable evidence (loans from private individuals, sudden large deposits), or not being able to explain the source of funds.
3. Poor English language scores
Scores below the required threshold, or scores that are too old.
4. Incomplete or inconsistent documentation
Missing documents, incorrect information, or discrepancies between your application and supporting documents (e.g., dates of employment that don't match reference letters).
5. Health or character issues
Failing the health examination, or having a criminal record that cannot be waived.
6. Prior visa history
Previous visa refusals or cancellations in Australia or other countries must be disclosed. Hiding them is grounds for refusal.
7. Overstay history
If you have previously overstayed a visa in any country, this will be scrutinised carefully.
What to do if refused: You may be able to request a review by the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT) within 21 days. Engage a MARA-registered migration agent immediately if refused — they can assess grounds for appeal and help prepare a stronger reapplication.
