AustraliaAsked by Rahul Sharma10 July 2026This is an important question that changed significantly during and after COVID. Here is the current position:
Standard rule: Your Australian student visa (subclass 500) is granted on the basis that you will study in Australia, in person, at your registered institution. Studying entirely online from your home country is not the intended purpose of the visa and can be problematic.
What is currently acceptable:
- Short periods of online study outside Australia (e.g., due to family emergency, short holidays) are generally tolerated
- If your institution has a specific approved offshore delivery arrangement (which some do for early stages of courses), this may be acceptable
- Some courses have a genuine blended model with Australian residential components
What is not acceptable:
- Remaining offshore for the entire duration of your course and never entering Australia
- Using online study as a way to defer coming to Australia indefinitely
- Studying from home while holding a student visa but making no genuine attempt to be in Australia
Visa conditions: Your visa has an implicit requirement to be in Australia and studying in person. The 'genuine student' requirement includes actually coming to Australia to study.
Practical guidance:
- If you are already in Australia and need to study online temporarily for a genuine reason, this is generally fine
- If you are offshore and considering whether to use your student visa without travelling, this may result in a cancelled or refused visa
When in doubt, contact your institution's international student team and consider advice from a MARA-registered migration agent.
