AustraliaAsked by Omar Abdullah10 July 2026Whether you need a medical examination (health assessment) for an Australian student visa depends on your country of residence, your intended length of stay, and certain personal circumstances.
When a health examination is typically required:
- If you plan to stay in Australia for 12 months or more (most student visas)
- If you are from certain countries with higher rates of tuberculosis (TB)
- If you are applying for courses involving patient care, childcare, or aged care
- If you have disclosed a pre-existing health condition
When it may not be required:
- Short courses under 12 months where TB is not a concern based on your country of origin
The Department of Home Affairs uses an online tool called 'eMedical' to inform you whether an examination is needed after you lodge your visa application. Your ImmiAccount dashboard will show a health examination request if required.
The process:
1. You will receive a referral letter from the Department or your ImmiAccount
2. Book an appointment with an approved Panel Physician in your country
3. The examination includes chest X-ray, blood tests, and physical assessment
4. Results are transmitted directly to the Department — you do not need to bring them
Cost: Approximately USD 150–300 depending on your country. This is not refundable.
Children under 11: Generally only require a physical examination, not a chest X-ray.
Timing: Get your examination done after lodging your application, or within the timeframe specified in your ImmiAccount. Do not get it done before lodging unless instructed, as results expire after 12 months.
