What is OPT and how does it work?+

Optional Practical Training (OPT) allows F-1 students to work in their field of study for 12 months after graduation. STEM degree holders can apply for a 24-month STEM OPT extension, for a total of 36 months.

Can I work while on an F-1 visa?+

On-campus employment (up to 20 hours/week during the semester) is allowed without special authorization. Off-campus employment requires either CPT or OPT. Unauthorized work while on an F-1 visa can result in status termination.

What is the H-1B cap-gap and how does it protect me?+

If you apply for an H-1B on OPT and are selected in the lottery, a "cap-gap" extension automatically extends your F-1/OPT status until the H-1B kicks in on October 1.

What does "Duration of Status" mean on my visa?+

D/S means your status is valid for the duration of your academic program as listed on your I-20, plus a 60-day grace period after completion. You must maintain full-time enrollment to stay in valid F-1 status.

Can I transfer schools on an F-1 visa?+

Yes. You can transfer to a new SEVP-approved school, but the process requires your current DSO to release your SEVIS record to the new school. You must enroll at the new school within 15 days of the transfer release date.
