Why use an OISC adviser for the Family Visa?

Family visa refusals are most commonly due to failure to demonstrate relationship genuineness, missing financial evidence, or not meeting the income threshold. An OISC adviser helps you build a compelling evidence bundle and correctly calculate whether the income threshold is met (including combinations of employment, savings, and other sources).

Frequently asked questions — Family Visa

What is the minimum income requirement for a Family visa?

From 11 April 2024, the financial requirement is £29,000 per year (rising to £34,500 then £38,700 over subsequent years). This can be met through the sponsor's salary, self-employment, pension, or savings over £16,000. An immigration adviser can help you determine if you meet the threshold and how to evidence it correctly.

How long does a Family visa take to process?

UKVI targets processing outside the UK in 60 working days. Applying from within certain countries (via Super Priority or Priority service) can reduce this to 1–5 working days for an additional fee. Processing inside the UK (Further Leave to Remain) typically takes 8 weeks.

Can I work on a Family visa?

Yes. The UK Family visa grants full permission to work and study in the UK without restriction. There is no requirement to stay in a specific job or with a specific employer.

What is the route to ILR on a Family visa?

You must typically complete 5 years on the Family route (including extensions) before applying for ILR. At each extension, you must show the relationship is still genuine, the income threshold is still met, and you have met the language requirements at the relevant level (A1 entry → A2 extension → B1 ILR).

What if we are not yet married — can an unmarried partner apply?

Yes. Unmarried partners can apply for a Family visa if they can demonstrate they have been living together in a relationship akin to marriage for at least 2 years. Evidence of cohabitation (joint tenancy, shared bills, correspondence) is essential. An OISC adviser helps you compile a thorough evidence bundle.
