Frequently asked questions — Partner & Family Visa

How long does a New Zealand partner visa take to process?

Processing times vary. Partner of a New Zealander visitor/work visas are often processed within 2–4 months. Residence applications take longer — typically 6–12 months from submission of a complete application. Having a thorough and well-organised application significantly reduces requests for further information (RFI).

What evidence do I need for a New Zealand partner visa?

Evidence should demonstrate your relationship is genuine, stable, and committed. Key documents include: marriage/civil union certificate, joint lease or mortgage, shared bank accounts or bills, communication records, photographs together over time, statutory declarations from people who know you as a couple, and evidence of time spent together.

Can my de facto partner be sponsored for residence?

Yes. De facto partners who have lived together in a genuine relationship for at least 12 months are eligible for the Partner of a New Zealander Residence Visa. The 12-month requirement can sometimes be waived if you are legally married or in a civil union. An LIA will confirm the requirements for your specific situation.

What if my partner visa application is declined?

You can request a review by Immigration NZ, or appeal to the Immigration and Protection Tribunal (IPT). Appeals must be filed within 42 days of the decision. An LIA or immigration lawyer with appeal experience can advise on whether the grounds are strong enough to appeal and represent you through the process.

Can I work in New Zealand while my partner visa application is being processed?

If you are in New Zealand waiting for a decision and your current visa allows work, you may continue working. An LIA can advise on interim work rights and whether a bridging visa is appropriate during processing.
