Study Abroad Loans
for Nigeria Students

For Nigerian students, the binding constraint is usually access to foreign exchange, not the availability of a loan. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) sets how much can be remitted abroad for tuition and upkeep, and the government’s student loan fund (NELFUND) is for study inside Nigeria — so most students abroad rely on family funds, forex remittances and international lenders.

How it works

Financing study abroad from Nigeria

The CBN sets tuition and maintenance remittance limits through its FX Manual. As of the FX Manual effective 1 June 2026, students can remit up to US$25,000 per semester for tuition, with maintenance capped at US$5,000 per quarter where billed separately. Domestic lending through NELFUND does not fund overseas study.

Collateral & guarantor: Because there is no large domestic education-loan product for study abroad, collateral lending is uncommon for this purpose. Students who need financing typically turn to international no-cosigner lenders.
