New Zealand's student visa is a straightforward but document-heavy application. Get the four core pieces right — place, funds, insurance and character — and it moves quickly.
What you need
- An Offer of Place from an approved education provider;
- Proof of funds: liquid funds of NZD $20,000 per year for living costs, plus your prepaid tuition. Three months of bank statements, an education loan, or a sponsor's letter are all accepted;
- Valid health and travel insurance for your stay;
- Evidence you meet Immigration New Zealand's health and character rules.
How long it takes
The average is about 5–6 weeks, but roughly 80% of complete applications are now decided within 12–15 working days through the Immigration Online platform. Incomplete files are the main cause of delay.
Working during and after study
Eligible students can now work up to 25 hours per week during term (raised from 20) and full-time during scheduled breaks. After graduation, a Level 7 degree or higher (bachelor's/master's) can lead to a post-study work visa of up to 3 years with open work rights; Level 4–6 diplomas usually give about a year, tied to work in your field.
