The Australian Department of Home Affairs publishes processing time estimates based on historical decisions. For the Subclass 500 (Student) visa in 2026, the headline figures are:
- 50% of applications are processed within 35 days
- 90% of applications are processed within 61 days
However, these are global averages. The reality for many applicants — particularly those from South and Southeast Asia — is significantly longer.
Evidence levels and how they affect your wait
Australia assigns each applicant an Evidence Level (1, 2, or 3) based largely on nationality and previous visa compliance. In January 2026, India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan and several other countries were reclassified to Evidence Level 3 — the highest level of scrutiny.
For Level 3 applicants, processing times have increased from an average of around three weeks to eight to ten weeks. The additional time is used for document verification, financial checks, and in some cases, third-party verification with institutions.
Priority processing
Students enrolled at Priority 1 institutions (generally Group of Eight universities and major providers with strong compliance records) can receive decisions in as little as 7 days. Students at lower-priority providers may wait up to 10 weeks.
Offshore vs onshore
Applications lodged from inside Australia (for course extensions or level changes) are generally processed faster than offshore applications. Offshore applications from high-risk regions now average 52 days versus 31 days for onshore lodgements.
When to apply
The Department recommends lodging your application at least 8 weeks before your course orientation date. Given the increase in Evidence Level 3 processing times, applicants from high-risk countries should consider applying 12 weeks ahead, particularly during peak intake periods (February and July).
Factors that cause delays
- Requests for additional information (adds 4–6 weeks)
- Health examination delays
- Financial document verification
- Character clearance requirements
- Incomplete applications requiring resubmission
