Can I start my PR application while I am still studying in Australia?

Accepted Answer

Yes. You can submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) through SkillSelect while still studying, provided you have a valid skills assessment in your nominated occupation. Some occupations allow skills assessment applications during your final semester. You cannot lodge the actual GSM visa application (189, 190, or 491) until you have your skills assessment result, but preparing the EOI and maximising your points early gives you the best chance of receiving a timely invitation. The Migration advises on optimal timing for your EOI based on your course completion date.

How does the student-to-permanent-residence pathway work in Australia?

The typical pathway is: Student Visa (500) → Graduate Visa (485) → General Skilled Migration or Employer Sponsorship → Permanent Residence. During the Graduate Visa period, you gain Australian work experience (which adds points for GSM) and a Professional Year opportunity (adds 5 more points). The Migration manages each transition, advising when to lodge each application and maximising your points score through careful timing and documentation.

Can a Sydney employer sponsor me for permanent residence while I am on a Graduate Visa?

Yes. Many Sydney employers sponsor Graduate Visa holders for 482 TSS (temporary) and then 186 ENS (permanent) visas. For the 186 ENS via the Temporary Residence Transition stream, you generally need to have been employed in your sponsored occupation for at least 2 years before applying for permanent residence. The Migration advises both the employee and employer on the sponsorship process, including Standard Business Sponsorship approval and nomination lodgement.
