Can I start my PR application while I am still studying in Australia?

You cannot lodge the actual GSM visa application (189, 190, or 491) until you have your skills assessment result, but preparing the EOI and maximising your points early gives you the best chance of receiving a timely invitation. How does the student-to-permanent-residence pathway work in Australia?

The typical pathway is: Student Visa (500) → Graduate Visa (485) → General Skilled Migration or Employer Sponsorship → Permanent Residence. During the Graduate Visa period, you gain Australian work experience (which adds points for GSM) and a Professional Year opportunity (adds 5 more points). The Migration manages each transition, advising when to lodge each application and maximising your points score through careful timing and documentation.

Can a Sydney employer sponsor me for permanent residence while I am on a Graduate Visa?
