Karaouine Study Abroad Fez

I have been to many mosques in different countries. This one is truly the most beautiful and peaceful mosque for me. I felt like going back to the Andalusian era. Such an inner peace.

Visiting the Kairaouine Mosque area was one of the most memorable parts of my trip to Fes. Even though access inside is limited to worshippers, just walking around the exterior and the surrounding alleys gives you a deep sense of history and spirituality. The architecture is beautiful, with elegant arches, traditional green rooftops, and a calming atmosphere that feels completely different from the busy streets nearby. The neighborhood around the mosque is vibrant, full of artisans, small shops, and friendly locals, which makes the experience even richer. Access to the main building of the mosque is restricted to Muslim men. Women can only enter an external section, while non-Muslims are not permitted inside. However, it is still possible to view the mosque from a distance and take photos without crossing the restricted area

I only got to see it from the outside since visitors are not allowed inside, but it was still amazing to stand in front of a place with so much history. It is recognized by UNESCO as the oldest existing university in the world, founded in 859 AD by Fatima al-Fihri. The architecture and the details on the gate are beautiful, and it is cool just to think about how long this place has been around and how much knowledge has passed through it. There were a few people outside when I went, and it still had that quiet sense of history. Even if you can only see it from the outside, it is definitely worth stopping by if you are in Fez.
