Study plans
- Why do you want to study in the USA? Give specific academic reasons — the programme's strengths, faculty, or facilities — not just "the US is the best."
- Why this university, and did you apply to others? Show you researched and chose deliberately.
- What is your major and why? Connect it clearly to your background and goals.
- Why not study this in your home country? Have a genuine, specific answer about what the US programme offers that local options do not.
University and academics
- How many universities did you apply to, and how many admitted or rejected you? Answer honestly.
- What are your test scores (IELTS/TOEFL/GRE/GMAT)? Know your numbers.
- What was your previous GPA or grades? Be ready to explain any gaps or low results calmly.
Financials
- How will you fund your studies? Know your total cost and your funding sources — savings, an education loan, a sponsor, or a scholarship or assistantship.
- What do your parents/sponsor do, and what is their income? Be able to explain who is paying and how they can afford it.
- Do you have a scholarship or assistantship? State the details if you do.
Officers look for genuine, verifiable funds — not money that appeared in an account days before the interview.
Ties to home and post-study plans
- Do you have relatives in the USA? Answer truthfully; having relatives is not disqualifying, but hiding them is damaging.
- What are your plans after graduation? Show intent to build a career, ideally with ties back home.
- Do you intend to return to your home country? Be clear and consistent — F-1 is a temporary, non-immigrant visa.
