A 2026 step-by-step guide for Bangladeshi students applying to study in Canada — study permit after SDS, Provincial Attestation Letter, proof of funds, PGWP rules, and avoiding agent fraud.

Canada is an increasingly popular destination for Bangladeshi students, offering strong universities, post-study work rights, and clear permanent-residence pathways. The application rules changed materially in 2024–2026, so make sure you are working from current information. Here is the process for applying from Bangladesh.

Step 1: Get a Letter of Acceptance from a DLI

You can only study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI), each identified by a DLI number you will need for your application. Once accepted you receive a Letter of Acceptance (LOA). Always verify an offer is genuine before paying anything — fake offer letters are a common fraud. See our guide on the fake university offer letter scam.

Step 2: Obtain a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL)

Since 2024, most study permit applications must include a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL) from the province where your institution sits. Your DLI usually arranges it once you accept your place and pay a deposit. Applications without a PAL are generally returned.

Step 3: Meet the proof-of-funds requirement

For study permit applications submitted on or after 1 September 2026, a single applicant must show CAD $23,448 for living costs — separate from and in addition to first-year tuition and travel costs. Acceptable evidence includes bank statements, a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC), an education loan sanction letter, and proof of paid tuition.

Step 4: The Student Direct Stream (SDS) has ended

The Student Direct Stream, a fast-track route once open to Bangladeshi students, was permanently discontinued on 8 November 2024. Everyone now applies through the regular study permit stream, so ignore any agent advertising "SDS fast-track" processing — it no longer exists. A GIC remains a strong proof-of-funds option, just not a shortcut.

Step 5: Build a strong study plan

With all applicants on the regular stream, a clear, well-evidenced application matters. Your study plan should explain why you chose the programme and institution, how it builds on your background, and your intentions after graduation. Officers assess genuine student intent and financial capacity.

Step 6: Post-graduation work (PGWP)

For college diploma and certificate programmes (below bachelor's level), PGWP eligibility now requires your field of study to be linked to a long-term shortage occupation on IRCC's eligible-fields list, which is unchanged for 2026. Bachelor's, master's, and PhD graduates are exempt from that field restriction. Confirm your specific programme's PGWP eligibility before enrolling.

Is SDS still available from Bangladesh?

No. The Student Direct Stream was permanently discontinued on 8 November 2024. All applicants use the regular study permit stream, so avoid agents claiming SDS fast-track processing.
